Heritage, Corps of Rediscovery to Perform
at Old Town San Diego, June 28

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Heritage and the Corps of Rediscovery will appear at Old Town San Diego State Park and perform dance tunes and songs heard on the American frontier.

           10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Time travel to the 19th century and see blacksmiths at work, soap making, gunsmithing, and exhibits of the fur-trade era — and tap your toes the music (even try some impromptu flat-footing).


Contra Notion will play for the old-time dance at as part of San Diego's Independence Day celebration.

     When: Friday, July 4, 1-3 p.m.

Dressed in period garb, Larry "Friar" Edwards, fiddle, Jerry Schrieber, guitar, and Christine Ouang, banjo, will play dance tunes from 18th and 19th century America to the lively steps of Ron Nelson, caller. Reels, contras, squares, winders, polkas, waltzes.

All of the dances are taught, so don't fret if you haven't done the Virginia Reel since junior high school. It's fun for the entire family.

Come join the frolic, which includes a full day of celebratory activities at San Diego's historic Old Town. (Parking can be problematic, so look for a spot in the CalTrans lot on the north side of Taylor Street.)

Contra Notion will also play for dances at the park's Stagecoach Days on July 5 and August 2.



contra notion - Jerry, Schrieber, Larry Edwards, Christine Ouang Heritage captures the music of early America on its recent recording, The Musical History Tour. The music CD features the ballads and toe-tapping dance tunes that livened up social gatherings on the waterfront, in the back woods and along the expanding frontier.

The Corps of Rediscovery is a group of dedicated living history reenactors specializing in the time period 1740 to 1840. The group appears regularly at San Diego-area mountain man rendezvous as well as Old Town San Diego, historical encampments, schools, museums, festivals, fairs and special events.

Larry Edwards is a historical re-enactor and performs with a number of musical groups in the San Diego area.
