SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Heritage will perform old-time music at the 22nd Annual San Diego Wooden Boat Festival, June 16-17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Koehler Kraft Boat Yard on Shelter Island.

Dressed in pirate garb, Larry "Capt. Friar" Edwards and Chuck "Capt. Strummer" Preble will fiddle the dance tunes and sing the songs of our forefathers, including reels, hornpipes, jigs and sea shanties. And they might just tell the occasional pirate joke.

Capt. Friar: How much did the pirate pay to get his ears pierced?
Capt. Strummer: I don't know, how much?
Capt. Friar: A bucc-an-eer! Aaaarrrgh!

This will be the fifth appearance of Heritage at the Wooden Boat Festival.

Special encore appearance: Bob the Parrot. (Why is the parrot called Bob? He fell overboard one day. Squaaarrrrrghk!)

The show will include vessels ranging from row boats to regal schooners, all on hand for viewing by the public. The show’s proceeds are donated to Challenged America.

Heritage performs regularly at San Diego-area mountain man rendezvous as well as Old Town San Diego, historical encampments, schools, museums, festivals, fairs and special events.

Edwards and Preble are both members of the Corps of Rediscovery, a group of dedicated living history re-enactors specializing in the time period 1740 to 1840.

Dressed in period costumes, Friar and Strummer play authentic music of the 18th and early 19th centuries on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and tin whistle. They portray mountain men, members of the Lewis & Clark expedition (including Pierre Cruzatte, the one-eyed fiddler), colonials, Revolutionaries and pirates.

Heritage captures the music of early America on its recent recording, "The Musical History Tour." The music CD features the ballads and toe-tapping dance tunes that livened up social gatherings on the waterfront, in the back woods and along the expanding frontier.
